Exploring the magick of cattle through prose and pictures

“Cows are amongst the gentlest of breathing creatures; none show more passionate tenderness to their young when deprived of them; and, in short, I am not ashamed to profess a deep love for these quiet creatures”

– Thomas de Quincey

A short backstory - I am lucky enough to live in what the author Patrick Smith calls, "A land remembered" - a beautiful melding of river to ocean beauty on the Treasure Coast of Florida. Part of this unique natural environment is the Indian River lagoon- one of the most biodiverse estuaries in all of North America. While I admit I have always been a "water" persons, my time in this area introduced me to a world I had never considered as magickal or beautiful.

My encounter with this lovely little herd was accidental at best and started with a simple phone call about property I saw listed for sale. As with the twisted path of life, one thing led to another, and i ended up meeting the rancher who owned the herd. from there, a wonderful relationship and learning experience emerged and i am now an unofficial “ranch hand” who keeps an eye out as he tends to his larger herd.

This site is a combination or prose, pictures, and a resource for learning more about what British author. Rosamund Young penned in her book, the secret life of cows - a journey alongside this quirky group of bovine who just like us, are an eclectic mix gentle and wild.

feel free to email me with any questions or comments and don’t follow the herd on Instagram or come right back here to the site!

Wild T Ranch Outlier Pasture 1

Meet the herd

  • Copper

Copper is the King of the pasture. A handsome Brahman bull with signature tiger stripes and starburst stripes emanating from his eyes. A true leader, yet gentle and loving to his pasture buddies and children.

  • Milky Way

Big Brindle did us right with this little calf- Sired by (of course) Copper, and Big Brindle doing all the birthing this adorable baby is already mooing. Named Milky Way for her gorgeous coloring and special marks that will keep you gazing at him like a starry night!

  • Black Baldy Mom (Rose)

Black Baldy Mama was skittish in the beginning. Her favorite thing was coming up and headbutting the gate. after the birth of her first baby ( a bull named baby black baldy who has gone on to rule another pasture) mama calmed down and is a gentle loving soul. she is also the mother to half moon!

  • Big Brindle

Big Brindle was named aptly so for her hefty body and prominent brindle/ tiger stripes. She is the mother of shamus the baby bull sired by none other than copper!

  • Brownie

Brownie also goes by Rose as this lovely cow once resided with one of the ranchers before moving to this pasture to “date” copper. She has a great temperament and is quite attentive to everyone in the herd. She is also vocal and moos back when you speak to her.

  • Baby Brindle

Baby Brindle is a 2 year old heifer and has the most beautiful eyes and tender disposition. she is loving and gentle to everyone in the herd. Baby Brindle was named for her shiny hide that sports the faintest of tiger stripes that become more visible under the bright Florida sun.

  • Daingean

This little hunk of a bull was born a few days before the January 2023 Wolf (Full) Moon. Copper is the proud daddy and Baby Brindle is the mom- a first time calf for her! His name is Daingean, Gaelic for sturdy and with resolve. He was hopping around, mooing, and playing with the others just two days after his birth.

  • Rian

The latest edition to the herd, Rian was born on an early, Florida spring morning in 2022 making this calf first baby of the new year. His mother is Big Black Baldy and Copper is the father. The name Rian is “little king’ in Gaelic and this adorable, spunky baby certainly fits the role! I have not gotten close enough to determine the sex, so wait and see!

  • Butterscotch

Butterscotch is a very shy cow and stays to herself more than the others. she does help in the care and protection of any babies that are born.

  • Caramel

Sweet as the candy and looks of a super model, Caramel’s soft, wavy hide and coral-colored hooves almost makes you think she was bred for the runway! Brownie is her mother and Copper is her father making her a prize heifer just on her looks alone!

OFF TO ANOTHER PASTURE SPRING 2022

  • Shamus

Shamus was yet another born under a full moon. His name means “supplanter” in Gaelic and by the looks of it, Shamus will certainly give hos own father, Copper, a run for the money. His size and stately demeanor make him a standout baby bull.
